Gladys Ross Sanders Memorial Scholarship
The Pitt County Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., in partnership with the Gladys Ross Sanders Scholarship and Social Action Foundation, established the Gladys Ross Sanders Memorial Scholarship to honor the life and legacy of an exceptional Delta woman and community leader.
Initiated through the Greenville (NC) Alumnae Chapter in May 1971, Soror Sanders served faithfully in numerous leadership roles, including two terms as Chapter President. In 1997, she was among 26 visionary Delta women who chartered the Pitt County Alumnae Chapter.
A graduate of Virginia Union University and a master educator, Soror Sanders dedicated 30 years to Pitt County Schools and was among the first African American teachers selected to integrate the school system. Her commitment to scholarship, service, and social action extended beyond the classroom into countless community leadership roles.
Following her passing in 2001, her family established the Gladys Ross Sanders Scholarship and Social Action Foundation to continue her legacy. Each year, the Foundation donates funds to the Pitt County Alumnae Chapter to award a scholarship in her memory, with the goal of fully endowing the scholarship to ensure her legacy of academic excellence lives on for generations to come.
Soror Argie Cannon Memorial Award
Soror Argie Cannon was initiated into Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. in the spring of 1974 as a charter member of the Kappa Sigma Chapter. A graduate of East Carolina University, she remained an active and dedicated member of the Sorority. She was one of the 26 members who the Pitt County Alumnae Chapter.
Soror Argie was deeply committed to community service and truly embodied the ideals of Delta Sigma Theta. Her greatest passion was the Delta Academy program, which focuses on empowering young girls ages 11–14 to develop into future leaders.
Soror Argie entered Omega Omega Chapter on February 21, 2021. In honor of her spirit, dedication to service, and love for youth development, this award was established in her memory. Each year, it is presented to a Delta Academy and Delta G.E.M.S. participant who demonstrates good citizenship, strong character, commitment to community service, and exemplifies the spirit of Soror Argie.
